Malawi’s Ministry of Health said Monday that the opening of schools in the south of the country will be postponed due to an increase in cholera cases.

Health has indicated that primary and secondary classes will not start this Tuesday, January 3, as announced, but will be postponed until further notice, assuring that it will not be delayed for more than two weeks.

Likewise, the head of the portfolio, Khumbize Chiponda, has asked the local authorities – in the cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe – to intensify the initiatives together with the Ministry, to increase the coverage of basic needs such as drinking water, food or vaccination in the most affected areas.

«For all pupils in all health districts, the respective authorities should improve compliance with recommended cholera control measures, including cholera vaccination for those who have not yet been vaccinated,» reads a statement from Chiponda.

The Ministry has also informed that it will continue to monitor case and death data in these major cities, as well as in the rest of the country.

Chiponda’s office has indicated that there are 409 cases, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 18,222. In addition, there have been 25 new deaths, bringing the total death toll of this outbreak to 620.
