The German government on Wednesday expressed its support for Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba’s proposal to hold an international peace conference and stressed that «in principle, any proposal to end the Russian war of aggression is good and right.»

Foreign Ministry spokesman Christofer Burger stressed that it is up to the Ukrainian government to decide on the holding, timing and content of possible negotiations with Russia, while stressing that Moscow «shows no signs of abandoning its original war aims».

Thus, he emphasized that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently stated that Moscow «continues to work steadfastly for the destruction of Ukraine’s statehood». «We have to take note of that, and that is why our support for Ukraine, for its right to self-defense, continues unabated.»

Burguer has further stated that Germany has long provided diplomatic support on issues that are considered important by Ukraine for a peace agreement, including the goal of bringing to justice those responsible for war crimes in the framework of the invasion, unleashed on February 24 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that there is no «peace plan» with Ukraine if it does not take into account the current status of the four Ukrainian regions recently annexed following dubious popular consultations that have not been recognized beyond Moscow and Minsk.
