Lasso insists that his mention of a possible reelection «is not an announcement».

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has insisted on clarifying that the mention he made earlier this week about a possible presidential candidacy with which to seek reelection in 2025 «was not an announcement».

«Reality educates and many times reality is changeable, therefore opinions can also change. What I said is within the framework of a conversation, it is not an announcement,» Lasso clarified in an interview for TC Television.

In the framework of his recent visit to the United States, the Ecuadorian president pointed out that the country’s Constitution allowed reelection only once and that he would not shirk this responsibility.

Critical sectors have reproached the president for thinking more about a possible reelection and thus giving continuity to his policies, instead of focusing on the real needs faced by the Ecuadorian population.

In fact, Lasso has already responded to the criticism and on Thursday clarified that his statements on reelection were nothing more than «an expression», while defending his focus on other aspects, such as the agreements reached in the United States on security and foreign trade.

Lasso, from the CREO Movement and of conservative and liberal ideology, took office at the end of May 2021 after the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced his victory in the second round of the elections against the ‘correista’ candidate Andres Arauz.
