Several World Health Organization scientists have pointed out that the increase in cases of COVID-19 in China casts doubt on the end of the global emergency.
The experts have indicated that it may be too early to declare the global end of the pandemic emergency, as reported by ‘The Guardian’ newspaper.
«The question is whether you can call it post-pandemic when such a significant part of the world is entering its second wave,» said virologist Marion Koopmans, a member of a WHO committee charged with advising on the status of the coronavirus emergency.
«It is clear that we are in a very different phase (of the pandemic), but in my opinion, this pending wave in China is a wild card,» she added.
China has from the start imposed a strict anti-COVID-19 policy that has kept infection and death figures low compared to other countries. However, the relaxation of policies in recent weeks, driven by social pressure from protesters, has changed the situation, reaching high infection rates.
