Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced Saturday in the Greek Parliament a subsidy whereby each household will be reimbursed from February and for six months 10 percent of its food expenditure for.
Some 3.2 million households will be eligible for the measure — two-thirds of the total — or 8.5 million people, for a total charge of 650 million euros to the public purse.
Households that meet the criteria will be able to claim back 10 percent of their food purchases in supermarkets and other small stores such as bakeries, greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers, etcetera.
The monthly limit will be 220 euros of purchases–a subsidy of 22 euros–for a single-member household and will be increased by 100 euros for each additional family member up to a total of 1,000 euros.
Thus, a family with two children will receive a maximum of 312 euros per month. A couple will receive 192 euros, and a family with four children, up to 432 euros.
These amounts will be allocated to a digital debit card that can only be used in stores that sell food. If the deposit in a bank account is chosen, it will be made quarterly and will account for 80 percent of the maximums.
Beneficiary households must have annual incomes of up to €16,000 for a single member and €24,000 for married or common-law couples. 5,000 euros will be added for each child or additional person living in the household.
